The Antonov AN-124 is an impressive cargo aircraft renowned for its payload capacity and ability to transport bulk, heavy, and outsized loads. Designed for the most demanding logistical challenges, the Antonov AN-124 is an engineering marvel, capable of handling a variety of cargo types. Its construction and advanced features make it irreplaceable for many global transport missions.
The AN-124 was developed by the Antonov Design Bureau and first took to the skies in 1982. Initially built to serve the Soviet military’s heavy airlift needs, it quickly showed its versatility for civilian applications. Over the years, the AN-124 has been pivotal in transporting large industrial equipment, space components, and urgent humanitarian aid. Its design and outstanding performance in various environments have solidified its place as a vital asset in global transport.
The AN-124’s high-wing design and four powerful turbofan engines give it the lift and thrust needed for heavy cargo. Its cargo hold is one of the largest in the world, measuring 3650 x 640 x 440cm, with a door size of 640 x 440cm, facilitating the loading of enormous items. The aircraft’s design includes reinforced landing gear and a robust airframe, making it capable of operating on rough runways. Its speed of 865km/h and range of 5,000km ensure efficient long-haul transport.
The AN-124 is produced by Antonov, a Ukrainian aerospace company known for its innovative and durable aircraft designs. Founded in 1946, Antonov has a legacy of excellence in aircraft manufacturing. Although the production of new AN-124s has slowed, the aircraft remains a key player in global cargo transport, demonstrating the enduring reliability and capability of Antonov’s engineering.
The AN-124 fleet has undergone various upgrades, including enhancements to the engines to meet modern noise and emission standards, structural reinforcements to extend service life, and avionics upgrades to improve operational efficiency and reduce crew size.
The typical crew size for the AN-124 includes six members: two pilots, a navigator, a radio operator, and two flight engineers. Some modernised versions may operate with a smaller crew due to advanced avionics.
The AN-124 can carry up to 348,740 litres of fuel in its ten integral wing tanks. When fully loaded, it has a range of approximately 4,500 km, which can be extended to 12,000 km with a reduced payload of 40,000 kg.
The AN-124 features a unique upward-flipping nose section and a rear cargo door, facilitating easy access to its massive cargo hold. This design is crucial for handling large and heavy items, such as industrial equipment, military vehicles, and humanitarian supplies.
